HAND operates in the Pihe County of Nujiang State in China’s Yunnan Province, south of Tibet and west of Burma. Where possible we provide patients with life saving or life changing operations, as well as the means to access medical care.
In addition we give health education in the area so that local minority people are able to do all they can to protect the health of themselves and their families.
Virtually every penny or cent you donate will go straight to people in need as we have minimal administration costs due to the trust that we have built up over 7 years of hard work, helping local people and working with government. This was confirmed in May 2010 when we were granted free office space and accommodation for our Medical Manager who will be living and working in PiHe Hospital.
HAND funded a fifth operation for He QIuYi on her leg which was broken and not reset properly when she was a child. Each operation has seen a dramatic improvement in her mobility and widening of her smile. HAND has also found a temporary school and foster home for her in the region while she recovers.
From the summer of 2010, our Medical Manager Jeff Mcconnell will be living with the Nu and Lisu people, leaving the comforts of Hong Kong for the beauty of Yunnan. Jeff’s first goals will be:
Search for children suffering from cataracts in the area, ensuring they receive treatment before it is too late
Raise local standards as he begins work at PiHe Hospital where Jeff will act as a Medical Consultant
Strengthen ties with local government so that we can begin our local health care worker training
Examine the potential for beginning micro finance projects in the area, commencing with interest free loans to farmers, see HAND Home Garden Project .
