| In 2003 three young British teachers and a Chinese businesswoman, Wang XiaoQing met Qin in a village near the Chinese border with Burma. She had crawled into a fire as a child and due to her parents’ poverty the damage to her foot had gone untreated. By the age of 14, a life threatening infection was eating into the limb. To save her leg Qin required extensive surgery, were this to not happen she at least needed an amputation above her knee to stop the infection spreading fatally. Her family was finding it difficult to raise the money to pay for any treatment however. Upon returning to his school, one of the teachers, Gareth Jones, wrote an e mail asking friends and family for support. The email quickly made its way around the world, raising the necessary funds. |
Gareth and XiaoQing then returned to Qin’s village to ask for her father’s permission to take Qin back with them to Guangzhou in south-eastern China. After he gave his consent Qin embarked on a whirlwind tour that resulted in her becoming a celebrity in the north of England where much of the fundraising was done. (see “Media” ) As more and more money was raised, the dream to form HAND began becoming a reality. |

Welcoming Qin home.
When we met Qin she did not even have an I.D. card, to take her to the UK therefore required a huge amount of goodwill and cooperation from local government. As donations kept arriving, Gareth and XiaoQing decided to build on these relationships and were granted permission to set up a clinic in the area. |
