Dear KTCT

Earlier this year we were lucky enough to receive a grant from you to fund a hygiene project for a year in rural Yunnan. Last month the first phase was completed; below are some of the achievements and pictures from the trip.

Secured a local coordinator

Mr Shi is a well respected local headmaster. After hearing about our scheme he volunteered to help with contacting other schools in the area to explain the project. His connections have made the introductory process much quicker, allowing our volunteers to spend more time carrying out lessons. His office will act as the storage area from where the soap and shampoo supplies will be distributed. To make this official, an inventory of supplies was signed by HAND and Mr Shi.

Student volunteers explain the inventory to our new local coordinator, Mr Shi (in yellow).

Carried out hygiene awareness classes

Classes were given to children from 13 of the 15 schools we wanted to target, however attendance was lower than we had hoped due to the pressure on children to work in the fields at this time of year. We will return in November to reach more children and also to reinforce the hygiene concepts for ?those children who were able to attend this time.

One of the classes. The children are seen here with some of our international volunteers.

Carried out hand washing sessions

After the classes children put into practice what they had leant. For many of the children this will be the first time to have properly clean hands in many months. At the end of the session children were given soap and shampoo to take home, and with any luck they also took home some of the hygiene messages.

Provided an excuse for some fun!

Life in this rural area can be hard for the children sometimes. The arrival of HAND volunteers provides a welcome break in the day’s routine.

After the children were clean it was time for some games. The children seen here are wearing clothes donated by HAND.

Visited homes to gather background information

To allow us to further understand the problems in the most rural villages (those further from our clinic); we visited a number of homes. Here we were able to see first hand the extent of the problems that may be contributing to the incidence of hygiene related illnesses in these areas. From the evidence we found we are planning to formulate a method of educating adults in these areas in aspects of food and water hygiene.

Although not representative of every household, this is not an extreme example of local living conditions.

We once again thank you for your assistance in this project. If you require any further information please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best regards

Nicola and all in HAND
